Adolescent Program

The Alta Bates Summit Adolescent Inpatient Program is Northern California’s most comprehensive and fully integrated psychiatric facilities for adolescents ages 12-17. Patients are encouraged to draw from their individual strengths to restore their maximum functioning and preserve self-respect. The 34-bed locked unit has separate areas for girls and for boys. We treat patients within the context of the family, wherever possible.

Program Components

  • Group Therapy: Utilize therapeutic group activities to address emotional problems and family issues.
  • Activity and Occupational Therapy: Allows patients to express themselves through art, dance, recreation, drama, and music.
  • Schoolwork: An on-site special-education teacher ensures that students continue their education while in treatment.
  • Crisis Assessment: 24-hour adolescent crisis assessment team of psychologists conducts assessment triage and collaborates with an interdisciplinary team.

The adolescent program features two tracks:
  • Comprehensive Adolescent Eating Disorder track. Physicians, dieticians and specially trained staff help adolescents recover from self-destructive eating disorders.
  • Dual Diagnosis Treatment track. Staff provides a supportive setting in which patients have the opportunity to share experiences and increase their understanding of addiction and mental illness.

Adult Programs

Dual Diagnosis Program

  • Counseling: Group and individual
  • Psychiatric Disorder Management: Effective use of psychiatric medications
  • Daily Activity Therapy: Incorporates drama, art and other expressive therapies
  • Recovery and Support Groups: Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.

Adult Intensive Inpatient Program
The 33-bed Adult Intensive Inpatient Program treats patients 18 years and older who have major psychiatric illness. Our goal is to return patients to the community at their highest level of functioning.
  • Program Focus: Intensive, interdisciplinary care within a problem-solving, goal-oriented, and reality-based framework
  • Family: Education and support groups
  • Extensive Supportive Therapies: Includes cognitive therapy, activity therapy, health education, occupational therapy, medication education, psychopharmacology
  • Electroconvulsive Therapy: Where indicated.

Electroconvulsive Therapy
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) helps patients who have failed to benefit from other treatments. ECT is safe and well tolerated with the use of modern techniques.
  • Monitoring: By a multidisciplinary team of anesthesiologists, psychiatrists, and registered nurses
  • Specialized equipment: Operated by an experienced staff.
